The Great Summer Shower Reset: What Does Your Hair and Skin Actually Need?
There is something about summer that makes us want to simplify everything.
We wear less makeup, let our hair dry naturally, spend more time outdoors and convince ourselves that throwing one bottle of whatever happens to be in the shower at the entire family is perfectly acceptable.
And sometimes it is.
But summer can also be surprisingly hard on our hair and skin. Sunshine, heat, sweat, sun cream, chlorine, sea water and more frequent washing can all leave their mark. Hair that is normally well behaved may suddenly feel dry through the ends but oily at the roots. Scalps can become itchy or congested. Skin can feel sticky, rough or simply not as fresh as we would like.
So perhaps this is not the season for adding a complicated ten-step routine. Perhaps it is simply time to look at what is already in the shower and ask:
Is this actually doing what I need it to do?
That question is at the heart of Janni Bars. We do not believe everybody needs the same shampoo, conditioner or body wash. Your hair at 25 may not behave the same way at 45. Your summer hair may not need what your winter hair needs. And the bar your friend loves may not be the right one for you.
The good news is that changing your routine does not have to be complicated. Here is how to give your shower a proper summer reset and choose the bars that make sense for you.
If your roots feel oily, heavy or itchy
Warm weather can mean more perspiration, more frequent washing and more product gathering at the roots. Add dry shampoo, sun cream around the hairline and days spent outdoors, and even hair that is not normally oily can begin to feel heavy.
Our Balancing Shampoo Bar is the natural place to begin.
Made with French green clay, spirulina and baobab, and scented with lemongrass and eucalyptus, it is designed for oily and combination hair and for scalps prone to itching or visible flakes. It gives the scalp a thorough, refreshing cleanse without turning hair washing into an aggressive stripping exercise.
Follow it with the Balancing Conditioner Bar, now also scented with lemongrass and eucalyptus, if you want a coordinated routine that leaves the hair conditioned without feeling weighed down.
This is a particularly good combination if you find yourself saying, “My roots need washing, but my ends don’t.” Apply the shampoo mainly where it is needed—at the scalp—and concentrate the conditioner through the lengths and ends.
If your hair needs a deeper clean
Sometimes hair needs more than its usual wash.
Swimming, styling products, dry shampoo and everyday buildup can gradually leave hair looking dull or feeling coated. That does not necessarily mean your regular shampoo has stopped working. It may simply mean that your hair would benefit from an occasional clarifying wash.
The Clarifying Shampoo Bar contains charcoal and coffee, with an earthy, herbaceous blend of pine, basil and bergamot. It is made for those times when you want hair and scalp to feel properly cleansed and refreshed.
You may choose it as your regular shampoo if that is what your hair loves, or keep it alongside your usual bar for an occasional deeper cleanse. One of the advantages of solid haircare is that two bars take up very little room in the shower, so your routine can change when your hair does.
If your hair feels flat and needs a lift
Hot weather can leave hair feeling limp, particularly when the roots are working harder than usual.
Our Energising Shampoo and Conditioner Bars are the summer wake-up call. The range is now scented with peppermint and sweet orange—a fresh, bright combination that feels particularly lovely on warm mornings or after a long day.
The shampoo is designed with volume and energy in mind, while the matching conditioner lets you care for the lengths without surrendering that freshly washed feeling.
If you previously knew this as our seaweed range, it is still the same problem-solving family, now with a scent that fits it even better.
If sunshine and swimming have left your hair dry
Summer hair is not always oily. Sunshine, sea water, chlorine and allowing hair to dry repeatedly in the sun can leave the lengths feeling rough, thirsty or more difficult to manage.
This is where the Restoring Shampoo and Conditioner Bars come in.
With ingredients including raspberry seed oil, cocoa butter and pink clay, and a fresh pink-grapefruit scent, the Restoring range is designed to bring some care back to hair that is feeling dry, stressed or lacklustre.
If dryness is your main concern, do not be tempted to over-cleanse simply because it is summer. Wash when you need to, keep the focus of your shampoo at the scalp and give the ends the conditioner they are asking for.
For hair that needs softness and richness, our Softening range, made with argan and shea, is another excellent option.
If your scalp prefers as little fuss as possible
Not everybody wants essential oils, fragrance or a tingle from their shampoo. Sometimes the best choice is the quietest one.
Our Calming Shampoo Bar is unscented and made with goat milk, castor oil and shea butter. It was created for sensitive scalps and for people who want effective haircare without added scent.
Summer can involve enough sensory overload already. If your scalp is happiest when products are kept simple, Calming may be exactly the reset you need.
If blonde or grey hair is becoming brassy
Sunshine, swimming and mineral deposits can all affect the appearance of blonde, highlighted, silver and grey hair.
Our Toning Shampoo Bar uses violet pigment to help counter unwanted yellow tones, while rice water supports the carefully considered formula. Pair it with the Toning Conditioner for a complete routine, or alternate the shampoo with another Janni Bars formula depending on how frequently your hair needs toning.
Toning is not about using the strongest purple product possible every day. It is about watching your own hair and using it when the warmer tones begin to return.
Do not forget the rest of the shower
The summer reset does not stop at your hair.
We recently introduced four new Body Wash Bars, each designed to turn an everyday shower into something a little more tailored.
Balancing Body Wash
Fresh lemongrass and eucalyptus make this a clean, crowd-pleasing option and a natural match for the Balancing haircare range. It is the bar to reach for when you want the shower to feel crisp, green and refreshing.
Energising Body Wash
Scented with peppermint and orange and made with exfoliating kelp powder, this bar gives the skin a gentle scrub while bringing a bright, invigorating scent to the shower. It is particularly satisfying after a warm day, outdoor work or exercise.
Clarifying Body Wash
This is the scrubbiest of the collection. Charcoal and coffee grounds provide more noticeable exfoliation, while basil, pine and bergamot give it a deeper, more earthy scent. If you like a body wash that feels as though it is properly getting to work, this is likely to be your one.
Uplifting Body Wash
With lavender, bergamot and eucalyptus, Uplifting brings a brighter floral-citrus character to the range. It is a lovely choice when you want your shower to feel less like another job on the list and more like a few minutes taken for yourself.
You can match your shampoo, conditioner and body wash, or mix them completely. There are no rules here. The point is to build the shower that works for you.
A small bar can make an enormous difference
A shower routine may seem like a very ordinary thing, but it is something we repeat hundreds of times a year.
When your shampoo leaves your scalp comfortable, when your conditioner gives the right amount of care without heaviness, and when your body wash smells and feels like something you genuinely enjoy using, that ordinary routine becomes noticeably better.
That is why we have built such a wide range.
Janni Bars did not grow by telling everybody that one bar would solve everything. We grew by listening to the specific things people were struggling with—oily roots, sensitive scalps, dryness, flat hair, brassiness, buildup—and making bars with those real needs in mind.
The plastic-free packaging is still important to us. But the environmental benefit should not require you to compromise on performance. Choosing a solid product should not feel like the worthy alternative. It should feel like the better product.
