Self-Care for the Holidays: Simple Tips for a Restful Christmas

Self-Care for the Holidays: Simple Tips for a Restful Christmas

The holiday season is a whirlwind—packed with excitement, family traditions, and (if we’re honest) a fair bit of chaos. Between shopping, cooking, and trying to make everything feel “just right,” it’s easy to forget about looking after ourselves. But I’ve learned that a little self-care isn’t selfish—it’s what helps me show up as my best self, both at home and in the workshop.
So, if you’re feeling a bit frazzled, here are some of my favourite ways to recharge and enjoy the season, with a few Janni Bars favourites woven in for good measure.

Create a Spa Moment at Home

You don’t need a fancy spa day to unwind. One of my favourite rituals is a long, steamy shower or bath at the end of a busy day. The right soap or shampoo bar can turn this everyday routine into a little escape:
  • Soap in the Shower: Our handmade soaps aren’t just gentle on your skin—they fill the air with natural aromas from essential oils. If you need to unwind, try a bar with lavender—its calming scent is perfect for relaxing tense shoulders and quieting a busy mind.
  • Aromatherapy, Naturally: I love how the scents from our bars transform the whole bathroom. Peppermint is my go-to when I need to clear my head or wake up on a sluggish morning. The fresh, cool aroma helps open airways and feels especially soothing in winter.
  • Citrus for a Mood Lift: The long, dark days can take a toll on energy and mood. That’s when I reach for anything with zesty citrus—lemon, orange, or grapefruit. These scents are proven to boost spirits and bring a little sunshine to even the gloomiest afternoon.

Take a Break Outdoors

Even a short walk outside can work wonders. I try to get out for a stroll when I can, (I go both on horse back and on foot). The fresh air (and maybe a little rain—this is Ireland, after all!) always brings me back to myself.
If you’re heading out, tuck a lip balm in your pocket. Cold weather can be harsh on skin, so I always keep our Heather Honey Lip Balm handy for a quick swipe of moisture.

Unplug and Slow Down

It’s tempting to stay glued to screens—especially when there are last-minute emails, online orders, or a never-ending stream of holiday movies. But sometimes, the best thing you can do is unplug for an hour or two. Brew a cup of tea, turn off your phone, and let yourself just be. I love reading, listening to music, or even just sitting quietly with a favourite bar’s scent lingering in the air. I also enjoy some adult crafting, I would not have the time for this all year around, but at Christmas I take the time.

Simple Acts of Kindness (For Yourself!)

Self-care doesn’t have to be a big event. Sometimes, it’s just about treating yourself as kindly as you’d treat a friend. Here are a few small ideas:
  • Use your favourite shampoo bar and take extra time to massage your scalp. Our Apollo with Goat Milk is especially soothing if your skin needs a little extra care this time of year.
  • Light a candle or hang a sprig of eucalyptus in the shower for extra aromatherapy.
  • Take a few deep breaths and notice the scents around you—lavender for calm, peppermint for clarity, citrus for joy.

The Little Things Add Up

I know the holidays can feel overwhelming. There’s pressure to do, give, and be more. But I truly believe that small moments of self-care—whether it’s a mindful shower, a walk in the fresh air, or simply pausing to enjoy a lovely scent—can make all the difference.
If you’re looking for a little treat for yourself or someone you love, our bars are always made with care, from natural ingredients, and designed to make ordinary routines feel a bit more special. And if you need a last-minute gift, our digital vouchers are always available (and delivered instantly—no wrapping required).
However you spend this season, I hope you find moments of rest, joy, and peace. You deserve it.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a gentle start to the new year,
Janni
