Someone else has already done the saponification process. The oils, the alkali, the formulation — all of that has been handled in advance.
What’s left is a solid block of soap base that can be:
- Melted down
- Coloured
- Fragranced
- Poured into moulds
It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s a great entry point for hobbyists.
But here’s the trade-off.
Because melt & pour is designed to be remelted again and again, it often contains:
- Added solvents (to keep it meltable)
- Stabilisers
- Pre-set formulations you can’t fully control
That doesn’t make it “bad.” But it does mean:
What you see isn’t always the full story of what’s inside.
Cold Process Soap: Made From Scratch
Cold process soap is made completely from scratch.
Every oil is chosen intentionally. The saponification happens during the making process itself — not beforehand.
There’s no pre-made base. No shortcuts.
Just oils, alkali, and time.
And that last part matters more than most people think.
After being poured into moulds, cold process soap is left to cure for several weeks.
During this time:
- The bar hardens
- Water evaporates
- The structure of the soap improves
- The end result becomes milder and longer-lasting
It’s a slower process — but it allows for something you don’t get with melt & pour:
