Meet the Clarifying Range: Charcoal, Coffee and a Fresh Start
Some washes feel particularly satisfying. After a busy day, a sweaty workout or a few days of styling your hair, there’s something lovely about getting into the shower and starting fresh.
Our Clarifying range has been a popular choice lately, so this week we’re giving it a closer look. With charcoal, coffee and a blend of pine, orange and basil essential oils, it brings together three solid bars with three distinct jobs: cleansing your hair, conditioning your lengths and washing your body.
If you first discovered our haircare under the name Cú Chulainn, this is the range you’ll recognise.
The Clarifying Shampoo: Start with the Cleanse
The foundation of any shampoo is its cleansing ingredient. In our Clarifying Shampoo Bar, that’s Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, or SCI.
SCI is a mild surfactant—a cleansing ingredient that helps oil and dirt mix with water so they can rinse away. It also creates the creamy lather that makes washing with a shampoo bar feel familiar from the first use.
But a shampoo needs more than lather. How your hair feels during and after washing matters too.
That’s why this formula also includes castor oil, cocoa butter, panthenol and conditioning ingredients. Each has a place in the formula, balancing its cleansing function with care for the hair.
Cocoa butter and castor oil are emollients, included for their softening role. Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is a familiar haircare ingredient used to support moisture retention and a conditioned feel.
Together, these ingredients reflect the thinking behind our bars: a satisfying wash should also consider what comes afterwards.
Where Does Charcoal Fit In?
Charcoal gives the Clarifying range its distinctive dark appearance and is one of its signature ingredients.
Activated charcoal is known for adsorption: certain substances can attach to its surface. However, how an ingredient behaves on its own doesn’t tell us everything about how a finished shampoo performs.
In this bar, the cleansing foundation is SCI. Charcoal forms part of the overall formula, alongside the oils, butter and conditioning ingredients.
We choose ingredients to work together. The finished bar—and how it fits into your routine—is what matters.
Coffee Oil: A Different Side of Coffee
There’s coffee in both our haircare and our body wash, but in different forms.
The shampoo and conditioner contain coffee seed oil. This is an oil ingredient, included as part of their emollient blend. It isn’t coffee grounds, and these bars aren’t designed to give your scalp a coffee scrub.
The body wash contains coffee seed powder, which adds texture and a physical exfoliating element.
It’s a small detail on an ingredient list, but an important distinction: the same plant can contribute very different things depending on the ingredient we use.
The Clarifying Conditioner: Care for Your Lengths
After cleansing, your lengths may need a different kind of attention—especially if your roots get oily while your ends feel dry.
Our Clarifying Conditioner Bar contains behentrimonium methosulfate, a conditioning ingredient used to help with detangling. It sits alongside cetearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol, fatty alcohols that contribute to the bar’s structure and conditioning feel.
Despite their names, these fatty alcohols are different from the alcohol people often associate with a drying sensation.
Cocoa butter, castor oil, coffee seed oil and coco-caprylate complete the conditioning blend. Coco-caprylate is an emollient used for its smooth, silky feel.
The conditioner shares the range’s charcoal and essential oil theme, but its job is conditioning. Focus it on your mid-lengths and ends, adjusting the amount to suit your hair.
Meet the New Clarifying Body Wash
Our new Clarifying Body Wash Bar brings the range into the rest of your shower routine.
This is a soap bar made from olive, coconut, sweet almond, shea and castor oils. These oils are transformed during soapmaking into the cleansing ingredients you see listed as sodium olivate, sodium cocoate and the other soap names.
Charcoal adds its distinctive colour, while coffee seed powder gives the bar its scrubby texture.
Physical exfoliation can help remove dead surface skin cells, but more pressure doesn’t mean better results. Use a light touch, and let your skin guide how often you enjoy an exfoliating wash.
If you prefer less direct contact with the coffee texture, work the lather between your hands before washing.
Pine, Orange and Basil
The scent brings the whole range together.
Pine lends a woodland note, orange brings brightness, and basil adds a herbal edge. It’s a fresh combination with a little depth—an inviting way to begin the morning or wash off a long day.
The body wash uses sweet orange oil, while the shampoo and conditioner use bitter orange peel oil. They share the same scent direction, with a slightly different blend in each formula.
Make It Your Own Routine
You don’t need a complicated routine to enjoy solid haircare.
Wet your hair and shampoo bar thoroughly, work up a lather, massage through the scalp and rinse well. Follow with conditioner where your hair needs it, concentrating on the lengths and ends.
For your body, enjoy the coffee-textured lather with a gentle touch. Afterwards, leave all three bars somewhere they can drain and dry between uses.
Whether you’re already a Cú Chulainn fan or discovering the collection for the first time, our Clarifying range brings charcoal, coffee and a fresh woodland scent into a practical, bottle-free routine.
